I love the idea of Harley Quinn getting her own story, with cutting ties with the Joker and going her own route. However, I've come to notice looking back at this movie, and Harley's character, that this was aiming to be a female rendition of Deadpool.
There are very obvious similarities to the Deadpool movies in Birds of Prey. From Harley's constant narrating and sarcastic remarks, to her having to protect a rebellious teenager that the main villain is out to capture. Of course, BOP does go in a different direction, but it becomes painfully obvious if you've seen the Deadpool films.
Despite the poster and advertisements promoting the possibility of Harley forming her own group, they don't come together until the final act of the movie. And even then, it's all because the characters were in a dire situation, and that they needed a desperate cooperation to protect the teen and defeat the villain. There definitely was missed potential with the team-up, especially with how the movie ends. While Huntress and Black Canary team up on their own, and Harley goes on her own path with Cass, poor Montoya has a bittersweet ending.
There were some very intense fight scenes, but they seem to invoke a feminist message with all the fights consisting of women violently beating up men. I'm not one for these types of politics, but they should've probably toned this message down a bit.
Overall, Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (that title is too long) is an alright movie. If you love Harley Quinn, you're gonna love this. If you're anti-feminist, then this might not be the movie for you.

I didn't like how they portrayed Black Mask or Zaas. However, their comical approach DOES fit the tone quite well. Also, some characters (Huntress especially) deserved a little more screen time.
That being said, this movie is great fun to watch. The mixture of the R rating and cartoonish tone do it wonders and Margot Robbie continues to be fantastic as Harley.
This is the sort of movie Suicide Squad should have been the first time around, if they were wanting to go down the comedy route, and it gives me confidence that the reboot will be significantly better.
So, whilst not perfect and not quite as good as Wonder Woman when it comes to the DCEU, it's still one of their better movies. I'd rate it up there with Shazam, quality wise.
